Welcome to Our Lives In Song. Our Lives in Song is a collaborative songwriting service where Kate works with clients on narrating significant life experiences or stories they wish to document in song. Through her experiences of writing and singing about her own life experiences, Kate is keenly aware of the healing power of song, and the importance of telling one’s story. She is thrilled to be able engage in collaborative songwriting projects with people who are looking for creative ways to tell their life stories as a therapeutic tool for healing, or as a way to document or celebrate their life experiences.
Clients may wish to have a song composed by Kate that is based on an experience in their lives such as the birth of a child, a cherished friendship, a rite of passage, the death of a loved one, a new love relationship, or a wedding. Or, clients may wish to work on a song over a number of sessions with Kate that reflects a difficult experience from which they wish to heal. Once the collaborative songwriting process is complete, clients will receive a professionally recorded mp3 of their song - a song that they can listen to and share as many times as they wish. Kate offers two different collaboration packages to suit clients' individual needs. Please see below for more information on these songwriting options. Contact kate@katereid.net for more information or to discuss your songwriting ideas.

Testimonials
Working with Kate on the creation of our song "Phoenix" was truly a life changing experience for me and has proven to be an important step to my healing. I have struggled with my process of coming out as a lesbian, accepting my identity and surviving intimate partner abuse while many times feeling alone, lost and unable to make changes in my life. I have been in therapy for several years and the process of songwriting with Kate has provided a therapeutic outlet for me to trust myself and my feelings. I have enjoyed Kate’s music for several years, but while working to create a personal song based on my experience, Kate showed so much compassion and understanding which made it easier for me to open up and share my story. Kate is a gifted songwriter and it was magical watching my words turn into a living song. During our time working together, Kate was always looking for ways to help me feel part of the process by sharing recordings, videos and photos which made our 3,000 mile distance seem insignificant. I would recommend Kate’s Our Lives in Song collaboration to anyone, especially someone looking for a creative outlet of expression. - Kris Lane, MA - North Carolina

After a breast cancer diagnosis in my late twenties, I was devastated. It was the song-writing process with Kate Reid that moved me through significant parts of the healing process. She created a safe, loving space for me to tell my story - including the hard parts, the funny parts, the angry parts, the awkward and embarrassing parts. Writing "Breast Cancer Pink" with Kate has been the most significant part of my healing process after my cancer diagnosis and it's been worth more than a million art therapy sessions! Thank you, Kate. - Dr. Chelsey Hauge, Assistant Professor, Mills College - Oakland, CA

Collaborating on a song with Kate Reid was one of the highlights of my life. I had an idea to create something awesome but due to my inexperience with musical instruments, it would have been impossible without her. She really helped make my imagination reality as we wrote "fYreflies" together. Being able to write this song for Camp fYrefly, an organization that is so close my heart, was truly an uplifting and healing experience. I am grateful for all that Kate has done for me: she helped me as a writer and as a person. Having that songwriting and recording experience with her is something I will value forever. - Chase McKee, fan + songwriting collaborator - Calgary, AB

As a child, I was tormented for being different, and in my adult life, I have often felt alone as a transgender man. I used to believe that living on this earth was not possible for me, that is, until I discovered Kate Reid's music. She has a rare gift for songwriting: her music speaks to the depths of my struggles, and when I listen to her songs, I feel like I have a  place in this world. - Trevor Zachary, fan - Vancouver, BC

Option #1: Just Write me the Song
Initial phone consultation (20 minutes):

We will have an initial free phone consultation about what you would like the song to be about, and then together we will set up a time to meet in person or via Skype, should you decide to go ahead. During this phone consultation, you may wish to ask any questions you have about the process of collaborative songwriting and any other particulars of the service.

Here is the process:

1. We meet once for a 2-hour session, in person or via Skype. You share the story with me, and we talk about the most important pieces of your story that you would like included in the song. I make notes and ask questions while we talk. We will also discuss the kind of “feel” you want for your song, for example, what kind of tempo and rhythm you want, whether you want the song to be celebratory or somber, what kinds of instrumentation you would like to hear or whether you want a simple recording of voice and guitar only.

2. Once our session ends, I will work on the song, recording a couple of different versions of it on my iPhone. I send you up to 3 rough versions of the song for your feedback. You may provide 3 rounds of feedback that include up to 2 edits. For example, you may wish to change, add or delete a particular lyric; you may wish to add a double chorus at the end; or you may wish to include another verse or a bridge. Using your feedback, I will revise the song and send you a final iPhone copy.

3. Once you have approved the song and have decided what extra instrumentation you would like to add (if any - that is, drums, bass, cello, electric guitar etc), I will set up a studio recording session and record the song professionally in the studio. You may wish to be present in the studio for the recording session. Once the recording, mixing, and mastering of the song is complete, I will send you the final mastered copy (mp3).

Fee:
$1880.00 (+ applicable provincial taxes)

Includes 1 2-hour, in-person or Skype session + ½ day in the studio: recording, mixing & mastering the final mp3 copy. This fee includes the song to be recorded professionally with vocals and guitar (and background harmonies, if you wish). If you wish to add more instrumentation (ie. drums, bass, keys, electric guitar, cello, for instance) add $150/musician + $75/hr. for each extra hour in the studio to cover studio costs.

Extra musician fees to be paid before studio recording date. All fees in Canadian dollars.

Payment:
$800.00 deposit to be paid at time of initial songwriting session. Balance due: $1080 + extra musician fees/studio fees (if desired) + applicable provincial taxes upon delivery of invoice and master copy mp3 of the song. Payment accepted via PayPal (credit card or Interact), Square, or email transfer.

Option #2 - Exploring the Self Through Song
Initial phone consultation (20 minutes):
We will have an initial free phone consultation about this option, what you might like to discuss and write about during your sessions, and then together, we will set up 4 session times to meet in person or via Skype, should you decide to go ahead. During this phone consultation, you may wish to ask any questions you have about the process of collaborative songwriting and any other particulars of this service.

Here is the process:
1. We set up 4 1.5-hour sessions, in person, or via Skype. You may wish to do some preliminary thinking and journaling before our first session about some experiences you would like to work through and document in the songwriting process. If that remains unclear, that is ok: we can also let the songwriting process guide us in honing in on a particular experience that may not be clear to you at the outset.

2. During our sessions, you share stories with me and we talk about which story you would like to write about. Then, you decide on the important pieces of your story you would like to focus on. I make notes and ask questions while we talk. We discuss the kind of “feel” you want for your song, for example, what kind of tempo and rhythm you want, whether you want the song to be celebratory or somber, what kinds of instrumentation you would like to hear or whether you want a simple recording of voice and guitar only.

3. We work on the lyrics and music to craft the song together. I send you a rough version of the song after each session we have, so that you may provide feedback. You may provide feedback after each version that can include up to 3 edits per version. For example, you may wish to change, add or delete a particular lyric; you may wish to add a double chorus at the end; or you may wish to include another verse or a bridge. Using your feedback, I will revise the song and send you a final iPhone copy.

Fee:
$2250.00 (+ applicable provincial taxes)
Includes 4 in-person or Skype sessions + professionally recorded, mixed & mastered final mp3 copy.

Balance due: $1450 + extra musician fees/studio fees (if desired) + applicable provincial taxes upon delivery of invoice and master copy mp3 of the song. Payment accepted via PayPal (credit card or Interact), Square, or email transfer.
